Aazadi Ka Amrith Mahotsav & Har Ghar Tiranga are tag lines that every Indian has heard over the last few days. It is all over social media, as caller ring back tunes, in advertisements – basically EVERYWHERE!
The #HarGharTiranga campaign was initiated by the Government Of India as part of India’s 75th Independence Day Celebrations. The aim was to enable every Indian (whoever wanted to) to fly the Indian Tricolor (Tiranga) at their homes. As stated on the website “The idea behind the initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people and to promote awareness about the Indian National Flag”.
However, as in many situations, for a majority of us this initiative has become all about an Instagram post, a Tweet, a Selfie or a certificate. Don’t mistake me as sounding too jaded – I too have uploaded my humble effort on Social Media. However, the essence of this initiative seems to have been lost on many of us. Many of us have bought the flag and have put it up in our homes with pride, displaying our patriotism. It is equally important that after its use, we fold it correctly and store it carefully without it getting damaged or soiled.
The flag has to be first held horizontally. Then the saffron & the green bands need to folded behind the white band with only a strip of each visible. After this, the ends have to be folded towards the middle so that only the Ashoka Chakra is visible. Then the folded flag is to be carried in the palm and stored.
If you are storing the flag at home, then make sure it is well protected from dust and damage & preferably kept separately. Do not store anything on top of the flag.

This is so important. Patriotism aside, people don’t know the proper flag code or how it should be stored. Just the other day, I saw someone with a flag pinned on the rear windshield.
Superb post Vasu 🙏🙏 most of the people don’t know these basic things and just sake of taking selfie they are flying Tiranga… But this time am happy that majority of people did this and on 16th August they have taken the Tiranga off as well with respect. I also uploaded my Har Ghar Tiranga effort on social media and was thrilled to see so many people followed the same. The storing of the flag is equally important. You have explained it very well especially the picture is very helpful how to fold the national flag. Many people have opted to store the flag at home. This article will be very helpful.
I have been following the Amrit Mahotsav and gave such a proud feeling inside. I know the intentions of Har Ghar Tiranga was more about the feelings and I am confident that irrespective of the social media, my fellow country people did have that feeling in their hearts.

Some cities are also collecting flags to ensure proper disposal. Following the celebrations, non-profits and volunteers in Mumbai are gathering national flags.
Yes. Here in Bangalore too some groups had organized collection drives.

I love the fact that the flag rules had been relaxed. I had always dreamt of hoisting the flag at my home. Thanks for sharing the folding techniques. I wasn’t aware of it.

All my life I’ve seen my dad preserving the flag, I learned from him. But now a day hardly anyone… Your post is very helpful.
The national flag this year has been about selfies and social media. Folding the flag rightly is something that I learnt recently. Every household bought flags. Respectfully, they should fold and keep it for the next year. But most people just threw them around. When will Indians realise the sanctity of the national flag, i wonder.
